The E Ring: Everybody starts somewhere! Whether you've never seen a horse in person before or you're a 'seasoned beginner', the E through C rings are most riders' first step in their Barrhead journey. If your first camp or lesson day is your first time ever on a horse, the E Ring is for you. Holding your reins as a trusty leader does the same (we promise, they won't let go!), here you'll learn the very basics of horseback riding: how to mount and dismount, where to look, how to steer, etc., all at a comfortable walk on our most trustworthy horses as you focus on finding your balance. Once you are secure in the saddle, can stay on the rail by yourself in a group lesson, and can steer your horse around a cone independently at the walk, your leader will join you again, and you'll have your first trot! All trotwork in the E Ring is done with a leader or walker, but once you're ready to ride full trot lessons on your own, you'll move up to the D Ring.
The D & C Rings: In the D Ring, you'll get your first taste of total independence: bigger ring, bigger groups, and regular group trot lessons with no assistance besides the instructor. You'll polish your steering and posting skills, work on more elaborate cone patterns at the trot, but riding is only the half of it: this is also where you'll start learning to brush, tack, and untack your horse before & after lessons, lead your horse independently to and from the ring, and mount on your own with a mounting block instead of a leg-up from the instructor. When D Ring lessons are no longer challenging, you'll move up to the C Ring: which introduces more rigorous group trotwork, concepts like half-seat and two-point positions, and your first trotted ground poles, all to prepare you for your canter test. Riders who pass this test will have a few individual laps of canter practice at the end of their lessons once the rest of the group is lined up in the middle to dismount. This is your last rite of passage before you graduate up again!
The B Ring: If dressage, hunters, or jumpers is your calling, this is your next stop after passing your canter test! In the B Ring, you will continue to build on your English riding foundation. Depending on your lesson group, you may start to learn the basics of contact and collection, or you may start navigating more advanced courses of ground poles and single raised cavaletti. This is where you'll take your jump test if you're interested in hunters or jumpers. Once you pass, you'll be introduced to crossrails and full raised cavaletti courses: well on your way to the A Ring, where the sky's the limit!
The A Ring:
The V & S Rings: Do you dream in barrels and trail rides? If you decide to go the western route, you'll graduate from the C ring to one of the advanced western discipline rings. The V Ring is where you'll hone your reining, pleasure, or western showmanship skills, while in the S Ring, you'll learn the ropes of more obstacle-oriented sports like western trail, barrel racing, or even western riding's sister, working equitation!
The X Ring:
The F Ring: A 'real' (48m x 16m) dressage ring, for both English and Western Dressage riders to get a feel for the

55% of our lifelong clients (63% year-to-date) are between the ages of 18-55. This means that disabled adults make up only the slim majority of our program, with 41% being ages 6-17 and 4% being over age 55. Access Eq truly proves itself to be a program for anyone and everyone!
In a 2024 voluntary and anonymous survey, 32% of our riders identified as multiply disabled, or having co-occurring disabilities that fall within different categories (listed as physical, cognitive, sensory, and psychological.)
Our community shows no significant preference between English, western, and ‘other’ styles of riding. 36% of year-to-date adaptive riding clients participate in English sports, 33% in western, 6% in both English and western, 15% in driving, and *14% in team sports. Of our English riders, para-dressage is our most popular sport, and of our western riders, the top spot was a tie between barrel racing and western pleasure. Meanwhile, 33% of our cumulative clients participated only in hippotherapy!
Only 41% of those surveyed in 2024 reported an interest or a history in competition. 37% of those had competed in at least one show hosted by our IN-STRIDE club. This data shows us that most riders who want to compete were able to, but even more enjoy the non-competitive aspects of horsemanship. With us, you are a "true" horse person no matter your interests!
12% of our year-to-date clients have gone on to take volunteer or work opportunities with Access Eq. In 2024, 8% of clients who rode with us joined a volunteer or working role at the barn.
97% of those surveyed in 2024 said that they felt more connected with the community and reported an overall greater sense of wellbeing since joining the program. 51% had recommended Access Eq to a friend or made a positive review of our program online, and 48% said that they would if presented with the opportunity.
82% of parents, caregivers, and supporters surveyed in 2024 said they noticed marked improvement in at least one area of their loved one’s lives, listed as “physical condition”, “mental wellbeing”, “social engagement”, “future outlook”, “sense of purpose”, and “other areas,” with option to select multiple items.
78% of our clients reported ease of travel to and from the program. 26% reported a travel distance of over 45 minutes. 39% had made use of our transportation assistance program at least once during 2024. 67% of those who had a positive transportation experience reported being unable to drive themselves. We see this as a huge success for transit accessibility to and from programs like ours, but we're still working diligently to get our overall ease of travel figure even higher!

"My first time on a horse was as a 16 year old in residential drug rehab—the institutional method never worked for me but the horses sure did. When Lord Palmerston said "there is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man," he was definitely onto something. I work as a Certified Substance Abuse counselor, also specializing in therapy harm and underserved communities who chooses person- and equine-led alternatives over the psych industrial models."

Catherine is well known around Access Eq for her unrelenting work ethic, effortless social butterfly wings, and happiness to lend a hand wherever one is needed. No matter the weather, hour, or what’s going on, you won’t have to look very far to find her. Her favorite thing to do is to groom the horses, and she always leaves them sparkling! She started volunteering at Access Eq just a few months into joining the program, and after two years of hippotherapy, has even landed her first supportive employment job. Catherine is such a true testament to the program, and we couldn't be more proud!

“As a person with achondroplastic dwarfism and a missing hand, I faced discrimination and infantilizing treatment because of my disability from a young age. Horses became my sanctuary early on. I became a speech-language pathologist and EAGALA equine specialist to combine my past in theater and voice training with my passion for horses, and working in my disabled community. I fully believe in the power of horses to heal.”

“I’m a second-generation American living with OSDD, a single mother, and a life-long horse girl. My horse Pepsi has a lot of health issues and goes on stall rest a lot so I started volunteering with Access to give back to the community that has given me a second home for so many years. I love being part of the Access Eq and I really believe spending time here and working with so many amazing kids here helps me as much as me working in the ring and assisting lessons helps them.”

Ash is a licensed social worker and community healer who specializes in chronic illness, Jewish identity, grief, ACE trauma, and disordered eating. “I graduated from Asbury University in 2003 with dual degrees in Occupational Therapy and Equine Assisted Services. I specialize in physical rehab and geriatric OT, helping people regain their independence after injury, stroke, or age-related musculoskeletal changes. The equine-assisted model is among my favorites for the natural benefits that a horse's movement and demeanor can provide to our nervous system as well as our muscles and joints. I strive to foster a positive, judgement-free therapeutic process for my clients."
